BDF News 01 July 2005:
- We are working on a partnership with Practical Action (formerly
ITDG) to improve the resillience of our connection to the Internet - If our connection fails for any reason, then our traffic will be routed via their connection and vice versa. This should put an end to those annoying outages
- We are actively collaborating with the ICT and Economic
Development teams from the Rugby Borough Council and Warwick District Council to get a much faster land based connection to the Internet using Wimax technology, and if we are lucky, some funding from Advantage West Midlands.
- Our Satellite connection bandwidth will be increasing from 2mb/s
to 3mb/s as from 9th July 2005 - up to 60 times faster downloads than a dial up modem!
- Web site updated to include support - www.frankton.org
- Network camera installed at Draycote Water - see the boats and
ducks live!
- The Friendly Inn in Frankton is now a wireless hotspot. Try your laptop out there whilst supping fine ales. SSID pubnet

The Satellite must go!
the satellite link which we’ve been using for the last 12 months has served us very well (most of the time), but the feeling is we must upgrade to a better service for the future. We are actively seeking other options, one of which is making a wireless link to Rugby, which will give us an uncontended (not shared) 2mb/s up and 2mb/s down. This will get rid of the slight satellite time lag and make using the system more instantaneous. It will also make VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) more effective, and VOIP (Voice over Internet) work properly using applications such as Skype.
